Old-School Currywurst

Let’s face it - the days of the Currywurst, that Berlin fast-food classic, are numbered, with changing tastes and increasing competition from döner, pizza, hot dogs and burgers (let’s ignore those grotesque “Asia-Imbisse“). While a handful of popular places and tourist favorites (Curry-36, Konnopke, Krasselt’s, Bier’s) don’t need to worry, it’s bad news for a lot of traditional “Currywurst-Buden“ like “Haase“. Situated right under the “Bierpinsel“ on Steglitz’ Schloßstrasse and open since 1976, it’s operated by a trio of seniors, a guy and two women in their early (?) sixties.
 
Most of the stuff on offer is solid, but there are also impressive stand-outs. Their ketchup is made every day in-house following their own (off course: secret) recipe, a savory&fruity concoction with a very nice yeasty, beer-y note; their “Scharfe Sosse“ tastes deceptively mild but develops quite a punch a couple of bites in. And try their “Fränkischer Stier“, a fried pure-beef sausage, mind-blowingly good with the house ketchup  and stewed onions.
